BMW's first SUV was the X5. The model dates back to 1999, it was in this year that the SUV was shown for the first time at an exhibition in Detroit. Today there are only three generations, the first in the back of the E53, the second generation X5 E70 and the third generation BMW X5 F15. The last, third generation will be considered in the article.

Exterior BMW X5 F15

Comparing the three generations of the BMW X5 SUV, the changes were significant and with the naked eye, you can quickly tell where which generation is. Most of all, the front end gives out the generation of an SUV. The modern BMW X5 F15, although a bit like the X5 E70, is still quite different.

The center, front section is decorated with a classic chrome-plated radiator grille, consisting of two parts. A little lower, at the top of the front bumper, there is another radiator grill with a mesh insert. Starting with the base BMW X5, a front camera will be installed above the bumper grille, just a little lower between the center radiator grilles. LED fog lights are located on the right and left. BMW designers did not bother and left the foglights in the same location as on the restyled X5 E70.

The optics of the new BMW X5 F15 are based on LED technology, and have become adaptive, which was not in previous models. When cornering, the optics are able to highlight the dark areas of the road, also thanks to the pedestrian detection system, to highlight and point to pedestrians at night. In the middle of the optics, the BMW factory installs "angel eyes" in all configurations, they also serve as daytime running lights.

The lower part of the bumper of the BMW X5 F15, although massive, is not as expressive as in the previous generations of the E53 and E70 bodies. The usual equipment will be decorated with an additional grille at the bottom of the bumper with various sensors and sensors, and two aerodynamic holes on the sides of the bumper. BMW engineers calculated the side bumper holes in such a way that the air entering them goes out to the wheels, then part of the air is eaten by the wheels, and the other part comes out through the side gills located at the bottom of the front fenders.

It is no secret that in every series of BMW cars there are charged versions or better known as "M" -ki. The new generation BMW X5 F15 is no exception. It will take a lot of time to tell in detail about this configuration, so it is better to put it in a separate review. But what I want to say, only an experienced amateur can distinguish the usual configuration of the X5 F15 from the charged new BMW X5 M (removing the M-series nameplates). Otherwise, there are no outstanding external differences. The difference in the front is in a black radiator grille and a modified bumper, while the side mirrors will give out.

The bonnet of the new BMW X5 is reminiscent of the previous generation E70 in many forms. The same shapes and lines, echoing the severity of the front grille. Compared to the previous generation X5 E70, the new BMW X5 SUV has lost its formidable and scary look, especially for the charged M-series. As many experts say, the new X5 has become dull and does not catch up with fear, for which the first and second generation BMW E53 and E70 were so appreciated.

The side of the SUV, in addition to the already mentioned gills on the front fenders, received curved lines from the front wheel arch to the rear optics. Near the gills, on the front door, the engineers placed a nameplate indicating the equipment of the new BMW X5. The drive type (sDrive or xDrive), displacement and engine type will be indicated here. Depending on the configuration, the thresholds of the SUV can be decorated with additional overlays or steps can be installed.

The door handles were slightly modified, but still the technology and functions were left the same. Despite the novelty of the model, the BMW X5 F15 SUV still has the same "sores" as in the previous generation.

Side mirrors can be considered no less interesting. They are visually divided into a body-colored upper section and a black lower section. The dividing, transparent strip, in turn, serves as a repeater of turns, and is clearly visible in any weather. The downside of these mirrors is the same small viewing angle, which cannot be said about the first generation BMW X5 E53, where the mirrors were large and thoughtful.

The rear of the new BMW X5 F15 hasn't changed much. The first thing that catches your eye is the new LED optics with pronounced lines. The rear optics have become aggressive, which cannot be hidden even when compared with the E70. As before, some were located on the trunk lid, and some on the body. Not so noticeable changes in the BMW F15 fell on the upper spoiler with a stop follower, it became longer and lower, as well as side skirts for the height of the glass. According to the manufacturer, in the new X5 F15 they serve to improve aerodynamics.

The boot lid of the new BMW X5 is still divided into two parts, the upper one opens upward, the lower one, respectively, downward. The drive to the upper part of the door can now both open and close the door from the passenger compartment. You can also close the door by pressing the corresponding button on it, at the end. The lower part of the luggage compartment of the BMW F15 in the open position will calmly withstand two people of average configuration, some use it as a seat.

The lower part of the bumper will change depending on the equipment of the new BMW X5. In the usual version, the rear bumper will remind many of the previous X5 E70. In the BMW F15 M-series, the rear fog lights will be vertical on the side bumper.

Talking about the appearance of the BMW X5 F15, many fans expected big changes, especially for the M-series models, but apart from the color of the radiator grille and small details, there is nothing more to give such a formidable look as it did on previous generations of charged X5 M SUVs.

For those who expected big changes in the interior of the new BMW X5 F15, they will still be upset. In the new SUV, the designers decided to move the touchscreen display of the multimedia system above the panel and make it sort of retractable, but in reality it is stationary and does not move. The dimensions of the display itself have changed for the better, instead of 6.5 ″ in the previous generation BMW X5 E70, in the new X5 F15 a 10.25 ″ touchscreen display. The new multimedia system can work with both Android and CarPlay, and there is no need to worry about which system was pre-installed by the manufacturer.

Further, the arrangement of devices, as in the BMW X5 E70, except that the designers have changed them in form. Under the display there are two openings for air supply, an emergency parking button and a button to enter the multimedia system menu. Going down below is the dual-zone climate control panel. It was expected that the dial of the BMW X5 F15 and other temperature management indicators would be brought to the center display, but alas, the designers decided to leave everything as before.

But still, the fact that the backrest moves well enough when the rear passenger grabs or leans on it remains a sore spot in the BMW X5.

The rear row of seats of the BMW F15 also turned out to be good, enough space and a good fit. If you need to carry two or more passengers, including children, then it is the X5 that should be taken, and not the X6, since the latter has a partition in the rear seats. It still eats up the necessary space and spoils the comfort a little.
