The appearance of a new car always attracts the interest of motorists. The Czech car manufacturer Skoda is very popular among European consumers and not only. Two crossovers Skoda Kodiaq and Karoq have already won many fans and are among the top sellers. Now the manufacturer has decided to surprise for the third time by presenting the new Skod Kamik crossover.

Officially, even before the show of the compact crossover Skoda Kamik at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the manufacturer revealed most of the information on February 26, thereby making a preview of the car. Let's consider in more detail the new product, its characteristics, parameters and equipment. At the same time, I immediately want to note that the new European crossover Skoda Kamik has nothing to do with a budget Chinese car with the same name. The very name of the Kamik model comes from the Inuit language (the territory of Northern Canada and Greenland), meaning “perfect fit”.

Despite the fact that the Skoda Kamik is completely new, the manufacturer's style is easily recognizable in its appearance. If you look closely, you can understand that this is more of a pseudo crossover than a full-fledged SUV, despite the massive body and good ground clearance. The front part of the novelty, the designers decorated with separate LED optics in two levels. Top mounted elongated LED daytime running lights with 4 elements in each (they also serve as dimensions), slightly lower additional high-beam headlights. This combination gives a special strict style to the Skoda Kamik crossover.

The minimum changes were made to the main grille of the Skoda Kamik, the designers still left double horizontal lines, a black base with a masked radar in the center and a chrome edging. In all likelihood, and comparing with the Skoda Scala soplatform, this will be a new style of the company, which fits very well into the overall design.

To emphasize the novelty and severity of Kamik, the full-width front bumper was decorated with an additional radiator grill, and the very bottom with a small plastic trim. Still, the manufacturer says that depending on the configuration, this part may change, especially for the sports version.

As the end of the Skoda Kamik's front end, it is worth considering the hood and windshield. Unlike Kodiak and Karok, the hood of the novelty has become austere, with a pronounced sharp outline around the perimeter and a raised central part. At the end of the hood, the designers have placed an updated emblem with a black background and chrome graphics. It is this emblem that will subsequently be installed on all new cars, including those currently produced. As for the windshield, here the buyer will be offered two main options: the usual one with light tint and heated in the area of ​​the wipers or with a heating function around the perimeter.

Sideways crossover Kamik looks no less modern, strict lines, a minimum of chrome and a sustained design, which can eventually turn into a classic style. Repeating the strict lines of the hood, the designers extended them to the full width, up to the rear stops. The lower part of the doors was embellished with a stamped L-shaped line. Modifications have come on the side rear-view mirrors, in contrast to the usual mirrors with a rectangular body, the new Kamik received a "chopped" triangular body. The lower part of the body is black, while the upper will be painted in the body color or at the request of the buyer. Depending on the selected configuration, the mirrors will be equipped with an electric adjustment drive, heating, LED turn signal and automatic folding. According to the manufacturer, in the top versions there will be available mirror memory for two settings.

There is also a small minus, which for some reason the designers did not take into account. On the mounting leg of the mirrors, turn repeaters were placed, which are directed towards the driver. This development has been seen on several Toyota and Mazda concepts. Experts immediately noted that the driver will be blind with such innovations and at night, at the time of the maneuver, the display in the side mirrors will be poorly visible.

What will be the body color of the new Skoda Kamik, the manufacturer has not yet officially announced. But according to reliable sources, it will combine the shades of the currently produced Kodiak and Karok, as well as the new Skoda Scala hatchback.

Most likely, in addition to these shades, there will be a couple of new ones. In addition, the buyer is offered to paint the lid to match the general body color or completely black. The design of the Škoda Kamik is further enhanced by light-alloy wheels as standard with 16 ″ or 18 ″ wheels as an option.

Behind pseudo crossover Skoda Kamik 2019 looks no less solid. Bright LED rear feet, with pronounced sectors, a massive diffuser and a sporty spoiler at the very top. But what stands out the most is the brand's new lettering in the center of the boot lid. It was this element that first appeared on Scala and will now be on all subsequent cars of the company.

Like the side section, the boot lid received a sharp line at the bend. Given the name of the car, the manufacturer promised to include an electric boot lid in the kit, as well as contactless opening. The hind feet remind many of the Skoda Scala, bright elements, most on the body part and a small part on the trunk lid.

The last thing worth considering on the exterior of the new Skoda Kamik is roof... Much depends on the wishes of the buyer and the configuration. Basic variants will usually get a solid roof painted to match the body color, with a pair of roof rails for attaching an additional trunk. As an option or standard for top-end options, they will offer a black roof, with a panoramic view and a sliding front.

The appearance of a new crossover in the Skoda line brought many improvements, in particular, for the first time, designers used separate optics, dynamic front and rear indicators, as well as dynamic direction indicators. Most likely this is not a complete list of new products that were first installed on Skoda cars. After the official screening, at least a couple of new details will be announced.

Skoda Kamik interior

The salon of the new Kamik crossover will delight fans of this brand. We can firmly say that this is the second model in which the designers used the concept of an updated interior. Details include a free-standing multimedia display, a fully digital dashboard and high-quality seating and interior trim. But most of all, the front seats, made in a sporty style, will pleasantly surprise.

Sitting in the driver's seat Skoda Kamik, most of all attention is attracted by the 9.2 ″ display of the multimedia system (the basic configuration will receive a display of 6.5 ″, the average configuration of the crossover - 8.0 ″). The designers made it in the form of a separate tablet attached to the panel. The basis for multimedia simultaneously served as two systems Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with the ability to synchronize gadgets and display the necessary information on the display.Below, under the display, there is a pair of air ducts and a climate control panel with a small monochrome display.

Central tunnel between the front seats of the Kamik crossover, the designers "stuffed" more than the main console. At the very beginning, there is a small open wireless charging panel and a pair of USB ports for recharging. Further along the tunnel, the transmission lever and control buttons for comfort and safety systems.

Here you can also find a mechanical handbrake (not electromechanical), several compartments for various little things, a cup holder, a cigarette lighter and an armrest. I would like to note that the armrest performs only its function and is not intended for storing small items.

As already mentioned, the front seats of the Kamik crossover are made in a sporty style. This is evidenced by the mono-backrest of the seats, the characteristic lateral support and the design itself as a whole. According to the manufacturer, the driver's seat can be adjusted electrically in 12 directions with the possibility of memory for 3 modes, the passenger seat in 8 directions.Second row of seats Skoda Kamik will be able to accommodate three passengers. Despite the novelty of the car, the folding ratio is classic 60/40, while there is no access to the trunk through the center armrest. Designers took each passenger a headrest. It would seem that everything is simple, but the sporty style and design itself distinguish the new interior from other models of the manufacturer. A plus can be called the fact that, according to the manufacturer, heating of the first and second row of seats will be included in the standard set.

As for the interior trim of the Skoda Kamik, the manufacturer has so far revealed a minimum of information. According to various sources, the salon will be offered in high-quality fabric, a combination of fabric and leather, or a completely leather version. The colors are beige, brown and black. Most likely, there will be other shades available, as an option the manufacturer will offer seat covers based on Suedia microfiber. Nevertheless, comparing the seats of the new Kamik and Scala, for a crossover they are much more elegant and look more expensive.

The design of the Skoda Kamik driver's seat depends on the configuration, but changes will be minimal. In particular, the basic version will be offered with a conventional analog instrument panel, the top-end equipment will acquire a fully digital tidy based on a color 10.25 ″ display. It can be said to be the largest virtual cockpit in this segment of the Skoda family. As in many similar cars, the driver can customize the tidy as he wishes, display the necessary data about the condition of the car or show navigation maps.

Steering wheel crossover Kamik is not particularly different, one might even say that it is standard for the modern design of the company's cars. Three spokes, two of which are functional buttons, as well as the ability to adjust the height and depth. There is an additional plus, the manufacturer promised to include a heated steering wheel in the standard set, in the same way as heated seats.

In addition to the general interior details of the Skoda Kamik, the designers have added LED lighting, although the variety of shades leaves much to be desired, only white, red and copper are available to choose from. On the other hand, lighting adds contrast to the interior and a pleasant feeling of comfort.

Since the appearance of the first teaser photos, the manufacturer has also revealed a little information about the technical characteristics of the Skoda Kamik, thereby giving an idea of ​​the future novelty in the brand's lineup. One huge and very irreparable minus is the drive only to the front axle, the all-wheel drive version of Kamik simply will not exist.

The reason for this is quite understandable, the crossover is based on the same MQB-A0 platform, the same as for the new Skoda Scala hatchback. An independent MacPherson suspension is installed in the front, a semi-independent suspension on the basis of a beam (works in bending) at the rear. Yes, as it is not sad to say, but the new pseudo crossover is the same hatchback, but with a modified body.

Nevertheless, if we compare the new Kamik with the Skoda Scala soplatform, the first one has become 121 mm longer, the dimensions are the same in width, but the wheelbase of the novelty has become 2 mm larger, which is almost the same. According to the manufacturer, the main audience of buyers of the Kamik crossover will be young people who lead an active way of life and love to travel.

On the other hand, this is still a loud statement, since all-wheel drive is still a weighty argument, especially for outdoor activities. Engineers solved this shortcoming by means of the programmed operating modes of the suspension and the Skoda Kamik engine: normal, sporty, Eco and according to individual settings. If you like sports driving, then as an option, you can pre-order the Kamik sports version, with a lowered suspension by 10 mm.

The Skoda Kamik engine can be divided into two main types - direct injection and turbocharged. To improve performance, the vehicle has been equipped with an energy recovery system starting from the basic configuration. This allows you to save unused energy and, due to the Start / Stop system, reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the load on the engine in the urban cycle.

It's also hard to say what the engine in the basic configuration of the Skoda Kamik is capable of, given the dimensions of the body. Most likely it will not be so economical and the travel resource is small. Another thing is the top 1.5-liter TSI version, the engineers equipped it with the Cylinder Technology (ACT) system, which is able to control the engine cylinders (in this case, it turns off 2 cylinders out of 4).

Even more unique and environmentally friendly for the Skoda Kamik will be the new three-cylinder engine of the G-TEC family, capable of running on natural gas. The power of such a unit leaves one to expect the best, but the fact that it runs on gas is a plus. In tandem, only a 6-speed transmission is available for such an engine. For all this, there will be no new information or some pitfalls after the official presentation of the Skoda Kamik in Geneva, since the engine has already been met before and there is a lot of information about them, including about behavior in different situations.

Safety and comfort Skoda Kamik 2019

No wonder the novelty was named Kamik, as the manufacturer tried to equip the car with the most modern safety and comfort systems. Among the list of systems that the Skoda manufacturer has already announced, it can be noted:

• intelligent pedestrian protection system;

• lane control;
• adaptive cruise control (up to 210 km / h);
• driver fatigue monitoring;
• passenger protection system (in the event of an imminent collision, it closes all windows);
• up to 9 airbags along the perimeter of the interior;

• monitoring interference when reversing;
• all-round visibility system;
• parking assistant;
• stabilization and maneuvering assistance system;
• automatic high beam control;
• light and rain sensors.

A very interesting system for many Skoda lovers will be the door edge protection system or otherwise smart doors. The manufacturer first used this mechanism on its cars. The principle of operation of the system is very simple, at the moment of opening the door, special sensors control the distance to the nearest object nearby.

In the event of an inevitable collision between the door and the object, the mechanism does not allow opening the door wider, thereby protecting the structure and avoiding damage to the object (car, wall, etc.). This once again suggests that after the official demonstration of the Skoda Kamik crossover, new systems and mechanisms will open that can facilitate driving or improve safety.

In addition, on board this model, you can note a Wi-Fi access point, 4G LTE mobile communications, Skoda Connect system for Internet access, various infotainment applications and a modern audio system with 10 speakers with a total power of 405 watts.

To finally finish off the fans of Skoda, in the front doors like Rolls-Royce, the designers have built in branded umbrellas to protect from the rain. Many manufacturers did not dare to repeat such a move, as they considered it a surplus, a copying and an additional detail that would increase the total cost of the car.

Price and configuration of Skoda Kamik

Before the official start of sales of the Skoda Kamik, the manufacturer decided not to disclose information on the list of complete sets, only indicating at least the main differences. The main difference will be both in technical characteristics and in comfort and safety systems. Still, there are many parts that will now be installed in the basic configuration, for example, a multimedia system, navigation, climate control and heated steering wheel, seats.

Accordingly, such a set of security, comfort and modern technologies will not be cheap. The manufacturer is still silent on the price of the Skoda Kamik, but according to experts, the basic equipment will cost between 25,000 and 30,000 euros. The top-end configuration can start from 38,000 euros. The official premiere of the novelty will take place at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Having considered the main points of the new Skoda Kamik crossover, we can assume what the manufacturer's subsequent models will be. The downside is that this new product did not receive all-wheel drive, even in the top-end configuration. On the other hand, the manufacturer promised to equip with the most modern and affordable comfort and safety systems. Externally and internally, the design of the crossover is modern, and given the minimalism of curves and lines, it will be popular for more than one year.
