For the first time, they started talking about the Changan CS35 compact crossover back in 2017, to be more precise, on March 16 at the Shanghai Auto Show. Despite the fact that there is already a second generation of this model, presented in 2019, the first generation is still being sold in Russia. According to the manufacturer, the design is unique and fully meets the modern needs of buyers. In fact, in the exterior, the previously known second-generation Opel Antara crossover is visible.

On the territory of Russia, the new Changan CS35 of the first generation is officially offered to be bought in dealerships. There can be only one 1.6-liter gasoline engine under the hood. In a pair there is a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. It is worth noting that the crossover is only front-wheel drive and is more similar in characteristics to a hatchback, but with the suspension and clearance of an SUV.

As already mentioned, the Changan CS35 turned out to be compact and more like a hatchback with a crossover suspension. Initially, the manufacturer said that the body design is unique and does not in any way repeat the features of existing cars in the world. Still, if you look closely, you can see the features of the second generation Opel Antara both in the front and in the back.

The front of the crossover reminds many of Opel. In particular, the front optics received an elongated shape and a slight bend at the bottom. The main optics were halogen bulbs, unfortunately there are no LED front optics in this model. The radiator grille, chrome edging, curved horizontal lines and the company's corporate logo in the center look no less graceful.

A mesh was used as an insert. The front end of the Changan CS35 is accentuated by a massive front bumper. An additional grille extends over the entire lower part of the bumper, closed with the same mesh insert as the main radiator. The design of the front end is emphasized by a small bonnet, with lines from the grille to the glass. Unlike most models, there are no windshield washer nozzles on the bonnet as they are hidden under the bonnet. This is a plus, since the hood design does not deteriorate, and it will not freeze in winter. There is also a minus, the hood was not calculated a bit in size and if the wiper is replaced, the parts will rub, which will eventually lead to obvious defects.

From the side, the Changan CS35 crossover shows true, compact dimensions. The side part was highlighted with strict lines, classic door handles with a stretch on themselves and a black plastic edging at the bottom. A huge plus of the Changan CS35 is that the side mirrors are located in the corner of the front windows, and not on the door part. This is a plus for the design, convenience and does not spoil the overall appearance of the car. Starting from the basic configuration, the side mirrors have been equipped with LED turn signal repeaters, electric adjustment and electric folding mirrors. It is possible that over time, an option for heating the side mirrors may appear.

According to the colors of the customer's choice, Changan CS35 in Russia, 5 different body shades are presented:

Unfortunately, Changan CS35 does not offer additional colors, nevertheless, in dark shades it looks much prettier. At the heart of the crossover, the standard is set 16 ″ with tires 205/60, optionally or for top versions will offer 17 ″ alloy wheels with tires 215/50. There is also a difference from European counterparts regarding a spare wheel. While many manufacturers began to equip cars with "dock" cars, the compact Changan CS35 received a full-size wheel hidden in the recess of the trunk bottom.

At the back, the Changan CS35 crossover hints in every possible way at the compact dimensions of the trunk and body as a whole. Big rear feet, a medium-sized trunk lid and a massive rear bumper. As expected, part of the stops were placed on the trunk lid, the second part on the body. Small but pleasant changes were made to the top of the trunk - a sports spoiler with LED stop repeater.

As for the rear bumper, it is no less modern. Large foglights were placed on the sides, and the lower part was emphasized with black plastic with a small pseudo-diffuser in the center. The presence of one exhaust pipe speaks of modest technical characteristics, on the other hand, a powerful unit would not come in handy for a compact body.

Finally, the roof of the Changan CS35 remained. Unlike many inexpensive crossovers, the new product has something to surprise. First, instead of the usual whip antenna, the manufacturer installed a shark fin, which significantly reduced the height of the car. The second one is the side rails for attaching an additional trunk, the manufacturer screwed them tightly to the body, which gives a high probability of reliable adhesion to the load. With additional points, it is worth noting an electric sunroof and a curtain without holes, stiffeners and the absence of unnecessary parts.

Having considered the appearance of the Changan CS35 crossover, we can say that it is worth the money that the manufacturer asks for it. Compact size, lack of unnecessary details and design made in accordance with European motives. If earlier Chinese cars left much to be desired, now they may well compete with well-known brands, since the quality is getting better, and the price is still relatively low.

The interior of the new crossover

Following the appearance, the interior of the Changan CS35 crossover has been updated for the better. Many people say that it resembles Hyundai cars in its features. The front panel received several tiers, with a slope towards the central part. The center of the panel is equipped with a 7 ″ display of the multimedia system with control buttons on the bottom and a pair of air ducts on the sides. The console is completed with mechanical climate control knobs and a small recess with an outlet, cigarette lighter, USB port and a small compartment for small items.

At first glance, such a set is modest, but considering the cost of Changan CS35, it is quite acceptable. The central tunnel of the crossover is equipped with only the most necessary things, a pair of cup holders, a transmission lever, a mechanical handbrake and a spacious armrest. For a separate surcharge, they offer an ashtray in the form of a glass with a rubber lining in the cup holder.

The interior of the Changan CS35 crossover is designed for 5 seats, while the seats are more reminiscent of European cars than Chinese ones. The front seats received a high backrest, separate adjustable headrests and good lateral support. The driver's seat can be adjusted in 6 directions, while the front passenger's seat can only be adjusted in 4 directions. Heating is also included in the standard list of front seats.

The second row of Changan CS35 seats is designed for three passengers, with a folding ratio of 60/40. For the convenience of the passenger, the back of the rear seat can be adjusted, and for a separate surcharge, add heated seats in the second row. As for the interior colors of Changan CS35, the choice is not great, most often it is a black shade, but it can also be brown or white. Artificial leather was used as a material for the upholstery of the interior, with stitching to match the body color. In general, there is enough free space for both front and rear passengers.

Finally, consider the driver's seat. Not to say that everything is super modern here, but there is nothing superfluous. The dashboard with soft, eye-pleasing illumination, the central part was occupied by a monochrome display of the on-board computer and analogue instruments in a circle.

The steering wheel of the Changan CS35 crossover is comfortable, without unnecessary bends, while it can only be adjusted in height, although it would be nice to add an adjustment for reach. In total, the steering wheel is designed for three spokes, two of which are reserved for function buttons. For the convenience of the driver, the steering wheel was sheathed in artificial leather with perforation and stitching to match the body color.

As a conclusion, the interior of the Changan CS35 crossover really does not resemble the previously known Chinese cars. Modern design, many controls and electronics control buttons, while there is nothing superfluous, which would add value to the car, but would be used extremely rarely.

Like most Chinese cars, there is no variety in terms of performance. The buyer was provided with one 1.6-liter gasoline engine, manual or automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

Changan CS35 suspension scheme is quite simple and classic. An independent MacPherson suspension is installed in front, with an anti-roll bar. This model really looks more like European cars, modern design, low cost and, of course, a minimum of unnecessary parts for which you will not need to overpay. The downside is, of course, that there is no variety in terms of technical characteristics, only one engine and two types of transmission. To all this, the manufacturer has repeatedly stated that no modifications or variety for the Changan CS35 crossover should be expected in the near future.
