In mid-October 2016, the German carmaker BMW for the first time demonstrated the future seventh generation of the "5-Series" model in the G-30 body, which has been the brand's best-selling and most popular car for more than a decade. The official premiere of the novelty took place as part of the Detroit Auto Show, held in January 2017.
The car received a more "adult" appearance, made in the style of the "7-Series", as well as a number of technical innovations and improvements, most of which migrated from the same flagship "seventh series". The main competitors of the sedan are the recently updated Mercedes E220 and Audi A6, but the five have a few trump cards in their sleeve that can tip the sales bowl towards the Bavarian brand.
Exterior BMW "5-Series"
The exterior of the redesigned BMW 5-Series evokes an athlete wearing a perfectly tailored business suit that combines hidden power, precise geometric proportions and sporty style.
The front part of the car received enlarged branded "nostrils" of the false radiator grille, neat but slightly frowned head optics and a powerful front bumper with pronounced air intakes and aerodynamic elements.
The manufacturer notes that they managed to reduce the drag coefficient to 0.22 Cx, which had a positive effect on the dynamic and economic performance of the sedan.
The profile of the "five" has classic proportions with massive wheel arches, elegant embossing along the side doors, a slightly sloping roof and stylish rims.
Separately, it is worth highlighting the appearance of a small air intake located on the front fenders of the car, as well as 20 varieties of light-alloy wheels R17-20. The rear BMW "5-Series" has got updated marker LED-lights, a new bumper and 4 types of tailpipes of the exhaust system.
Customers can choose from three exterior packages: Sport Line, Luxury Line and M-Sport, which caters to the needs of even the most sophisticated car enthusiasts. The dimensions of the novelty are fully consistent with those of the E-class and are:

- Wide - 1868 mm;
- In height - 1466 mm.
The wheelbase of the sedan is 2975 mm, which is one of the best indicators in the class and provides the maximum level of comfort for both front and second row passengers.
Interior of the "five"
The interior of the BMW "5-Series" can be safely set as an example to follow, which on the one hand demonstrates a sporty, and on the other - a classic and premium design style.
The front panel architecture is made in the corporate style, while it is as close as possible to the flagship. In front of the driver there is a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel that is ideal in cross section and grip, as well as a laconic and easy-to-read instrument panel even with a cursory glance. The center console has acquired a large 10.25-inch touchscreen display of the multimedia information complex, as well as a stylish climate control unit.
The quality and fit of the parts defies any criticism: high-quality genuine leather, wood and aluminum inserts, which is fully consistent with premium cars.
The front seats have a perfectly cut profile with an optimal level of rigidity, excellent lateral support and a variety of electrical adjustments, which allows a person of any size to comfortably sit behind the wheel of a car.
The second row seats are profiled for three passengers, but the protruding central tunnel can cause inconvenience to the passenger sitting in the center. Otherwise, there is more than enough free space, both in height and width, and in length.
The volume of the trunk in the standard position is 530 liters, while it can be increased by folding the backrests of the second row. In the underground luggage compartment there is a repair kit and a set of special tools.
BMW management emphasizes that the interior of the new five received improved noise insulation, as well as a significantly expanded list of standard and optional equipment, which made the time in the car even more comfortable.

For starters, the car will be offered with two petrol and two diesel engines, aggregated by an 8-speed automatic transmission (except for the base diesel, offered with a 6-level "mechanics"). Also, each of the modifications can be represented by both rear and branded all-wheel drive xDrive, which can transfer part of the torque to the front clutch.
The range of engines is presented:
- Gasoline 2-liter "four" giving out 252 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The maximum speed of a car with such a motor approaches 250 km / h, and acceleration from 0 to 100 takes about 6.2 seconds. Fuel consumption is 5.5-6.4 l / 100 km in combined driving mode;
- Gasoline 3-liter "six" with a capacity of 340 "horses" and 450 Nm of torque. With such a motor, the car easily accelerates to 250 km / h, while accelerating to hundreds takes only 4.8 seconds. The appetite of this modification varies between 6.5-7.5 l / 100 km for rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive modification;
- A 2-liter four-cylinder diesel that develops 400 Nm of torque and 190 hp. To accelerate from 0 to 100, such an engine requires 7.5 seconds, and the maximum possible speed is 232 km / h. It is one of the most economical engines in the class, consuming only about 4.1-4.8 l / 100 km on a combined cycle;
- 3-liter 265-horsepower "six", equipped with a turbocharger and direct injection system. This power unit consumes about 4.7 l / 100 km, and also accelerates the car from zero to "hundreds" in 5.5 seconds. The maximum speed is limited by an electronic stranglehold at around 250 km / h.
In the future, the engine range will be expanded with a 4.4-liter 462-horsepower engine, as well as a 252-horsepower hybrid modification, which will be able to drive on electric traction alone for just over 45 km.
The new BMW “5-Series” is built on the modular CLAR platform, which is also presented in a more advanced form in the flagship 7-Series model. This concept involves the use of a two-lever in the front and an original five-lever in the back.
As an option, the car can be equipped with adaptive shock absorbers, but pneumatic bellows, unlike the "seven", are not available even for a surcharge.
In comparison with its predecessor, the new "five" received a more rigid body, which was achieved thanks to the use of ultra-strong alloys of steel and aluminum, as well as elements from magnesium alloys. At the same time, the curb weight of the sedan has decreased by 100 kg in comparison with the previous modification.

The seventh generation of the "five" offers a wide range of standard and optional passive and active safety systems, which allows the driver to feel confident in almost any life situation. Among them:

Like its predecessor, the sedan received 5 stars in the EURO NCAP crash tests, however, you would not expect otherwise from a car belonging to the business class. Due to the high level of comfort and safety, the car is ideal for the role of a family car.

In the Russian market, the new "five" BMW is offered in several trim levels, while the price of the car starts at 44.52 thousand dollars, or about 2.76 million rubles. For this money, the buyer receives the following set of equipment:

In the maximum configuration and the top engine, the price tag for the car easily exceeds the mark of 82.26 thousand dollars (5.1 million rubles).

The 2017 BMW "5-Series" is one of the best E-Class business sedans, offering benchmark handling, a well-tailored exterior, high-quality and ergonomic interior and a wide range of powerful and efficient engines. All this allows us not to doubt the popularity of the "five", sales of which for 44 years exceeded the mark of 7.6 million copies.
