Automobile manufacturer Mitsubishi is known for its cars, it is both passenger sedans, sports coupes and high-quality SUVs and compact crossovers. So, recently, the Japanese manufacturer at the auto show in New York presented a charged hybrid Outlander 2017.

The PHEV prefix appears in the crossover for a reason, but stands for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. This is the first indication that a hybrid unit capable of both fuel and electricity will be hidden under the hood.

Exterior Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi Motors say this is a completely new Outlander crossover, but at first glance, the features of the previous generation are already visible and recognizable. At the front of the Outlander PHEV, the first thing that catches your eye is a completely unfamiliar bumper. The combination of a body-colored finish, chrome inserts and a black center can give the impression that the designers forgot to paint the center or simply didn't install it. But still, this is such an idea from the company. The middle part is painted black, half of this insert was taken under the radiator grill.

Experts immediately say that such a design is not thought out, since the large air holes and the lack of a protective mesh will not be able to protect the aluminum radiator. A small stone or other object can easily damage the engine radiator or climate control of the Outlander PHEV.

The Outlander's lower bumper is also open to increase engine airflow and improve aerodynamics, with a curved insert around it. The bottom of the entire bumper is accentuated by a splitter, with engine protection. At the very top, there is a chrome grille with two stripes, recognizable by the shapes from the previous generation of the model. In the middle of the grille there is the emblem of the Mitsubishi Motors company.

The front optics are made in a modern style. Depending on the configuration, halogen or LED headlights will be installed, but fog lights on the sides in the bumper will be installed in all Outlander PHEV models. Both on the left and right, the front optics on the side and below are emphasized by a chrome insert in the bumper, it is this insert that makes the front bumper unusual. She divides it into a side and a middle part.

The hood of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has remained the same, more curved in the middle fits well between the fenders, and not on them, as is the case in new cars. The heated windshield will be available only for the maximum configuration of the Outlander PHEV Instyle NAVI with Safety, the rest of the trim levels will be normal.

The side section of the 2017 Outlander PHEV hybrid remains largely unchanged, the side mirrors are painted in body color, they will be equipped with turn signals, and side cameras in the lower section. The door handles will be painted to match the body color, with a classic mechanical opening drive. The first lettering that differentiates this Outlander PHEV from the regular Outlander crossover is the 'Plug-in-Hybrid EV' badge on the side of the front fender.

The lower part of the doors is accentuated by two chrome stripes, one on the door. In the lower part of the side window, chrome inserts are also located. The rest of the shapes were left the same for the Outlander.

The rear of the 2017 Outlander PHEV crossover resembles the latest Pajero Sport, the characteristic extended rear optics are clearly visible from a distance. In the upper part of the trunk, above the glass, a spoiler, painted in body color, with a stop repeater was placed. A wiper was placed at the bottom of the glass.

The two feet on the boot lid are connected by a chrome strip, under which is the Mitsubishi emblem. At the very bottom, the designers have placed the inscription of the brand and model of the car, as well as the name PHEV, which indicates that the Outlander is a hybrid.

The last thing to notice about the exterior of the Hybrid Outlander is the roof of the car, with a shark fin antenna at the rear. The roof itself will be wavy with stiffening ribs, and it can also be either with a hatch or panoramic in the maximum configuration. On the sides were placed handrails for the installation of an additional roof rack.

The dimensions of the new Outlander PHEV 2017 are:

  • length 4695 mm;
  • width 1800 mm;
  • height 1710 mm;
  • wheelbase length 2670 mm.

The Outlander Hybrid has a fuel capacity of 45 liters and a trunk volume of 463 liters. With such dimensions, the weight of the crossover is 1845 kg. in the equipped form. The new crossover will be fitted with 16 "wheels for the base trim and 18" for the rest.

With regard to body colors, the manufacturer offers:

  • White;
  • Gray;
  • Red;
  • black;
  • pearl white;
  • Brown;
  • light black.

The appearance of the Outlander crossover turned out to be unusual. The front end is seemingly divided into three parts thanks to the black center and chrome inserts. Behind the big feet, the 2017 Outlander PHEV designers have tried to make it as visible as possible.

Outlander PHEV 2017 interior

The salon of the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2017, like that of another car from this company, turned out to be rich in equipment and high-quality trim. The front panel is covered with leather. If we take the average configuration for consideration, then the first thing that catches your eye is the large multimedia display. In the basic configuration, a standard audio system is installed in its place.

The Outlander Hybrid will display audio information, navigation maps, crossover cameras and other valid vehicle information. Thanks to the new Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems, a smartphone compatible with these operating systems can be connected. Four speakers will be installed for the standard Intense, six for the middle models, and nine for the maximum.

Slightly below are the emergency stop button, seat heating button and climate control panel. The air supply control is two-zone, this will allow you to set the temperature for the left and right side of the Outlander PHEV 2017 passengers. There are openings for air supply to the left of the display. You can see that instead of the two usual ones, four air ducts were placed around the entire perimeter of the front panel, two of these holes were located above the compartment for things (glove compartments). Under the climate control panel there was a USB connector, a button for turning on the heating by the steering wheel, a DC power connector, as well as a standard cigarette lighter.

Moving even lower, we stumble upon the gear lever of the hybrid Outlander, in all trim levels it will be automatic, so the designers placed an electronic handbrake, a control button for the hybrid installation, all-wheel drive and heated front seats near the lever.

The instrument panel can be considered a lot of interesting, since the Outlander PHEV 2017 is a hybrid model, then there are quite a few instruments with meters. On the right, a speedometer was placed, on the left, a tachometer with notes on consumption, instead of the usual figures for revolutions. In the middle is a rectangular display of the on-board computer. This display will show information about the state of charge of the batteries, how long the Outlander PHEV 2017 can travel on only one battery and other information related to the engine and the condition of the car.

I would like to say right away that unlike most hybrid models, and almost every manufacturer now produces them, in Outlander PHEV many elements are not transferred to touch controls or huge displays, but are made in a classic style, as for the usual Outlander 2016 crossover.

Behind the dashboard there is a steering wheel, starting from the base model, a multimedia control system will be installed on the steering wheel. For the 2017 Outlander PHEV's top pick, there are paddles behind the wheel for shifting gears in Sport mode.To the left of the steering wheel, there are buttons for opening the trunk lid, adjusting the light of the front optics and others.

The manufacturer offers three colors of seat upholstery:

  • black;
  • dark brown.

The interior itself will be in two colors, the top is light cream, the lower part, depending on the chosen color of the seats. With regard to materials, it can be either a combination of leather with inserts from leatherette, or fabric (the latter is only black).

Along the entire perimeter, the designers have placed inserts made of plastic, it can be both carbon-like and wood-like. The door trim is also made in half the color of the seats and the interior color. For convenience, in the cabin, you can note a section for glasses, holders for glasses, connectors for charging and connecting devices on the second row of seats.

We can say that the interior is comfortable and quiet, good seat material and comfortable fit justify the cost of the Outlander PHEV 2017. Good stuffing with various auxiliary systems will also simplify control over the crossover.

Crossover safety

As in any car, the moment of safety is important when buying, someone pays less attention to it, someone more, but still the standards must be met.

Nowadays, few people can be surprised by the presence of airbags in modern cars; they are also available in the Outlander PHEV 2017. For the driver, the first is in the steering wheel, the second to protect the legs, from the front passenger side is installed in the front panel. As for the second row of seats, curtain airbags are installed for them to protect against side impact.

In addition to the pillows, standard auxiliary systems are installed: ABS, HAS, active stabilization system ASC, emergency stop system ESS. Adaptive cruise control will be installed in the top trim, and for an additional fee, in other trim levels of the Outlander PHEV 2017, as well as the FCM and LDW systems. An all-round visibility system and electronic boot lid actuation will be available for Instyle Navi and Instyle Navi with Safety trim levels.

Any trim level of the 2017 Outlander PHEV will include a tire pressure sensor, immobilizer, factory alarm and head restraints in both rows of seats. From the comfort that comes with any configuration, one can note a heated steering wheel, a keyless control system, dual-zone climate control, heated rear window, a rain sensor, central locking and a Bluetooth system for connecting a smartphone or other device.

Engineers have done a good job on the safety system and additional systems in the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2017. The front crossover has completely changed its appearance and looks more like an SUV.

2017 Outlander Hybrid Specs

The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2017 crossover does not differ in a wide variety of characteristics.

In total, four configurations will be available on the market:

  • Intense;
  • Intense +;
  • Instyle Navi;
  • Instyle Navi with safety.

Each Outlander trim is unique and different, but only in the interior. In technical specifications, the new crossover is the same in all trim levels. Since this is a hybrid Outlander, we will consider the engine from two angles. All configurations will be equipped with a 2 liter DOHC MIVEC gasoline engine. 16 valves. The entire crossover is designed for 5 seats.

The Outlander's petrol engine has 121 horsepower and a maximum torque of 4500 rpm, these parameters are due to the presence of an electric motor. According to Mitsubishi Motors engineers, the consumption with such parameters will be 1.8 liters. per 100 km of track, but still these are only declared, but the real parameters have not yet been tested. Since the Outlander will only go on sale this fall as a 2017 model. CO2 emissions will be 42 g / 100 km. All trim levels will be all-wheel drive and equipped with an automatic transmission with a choice of driving modes.

There will be three modes available:

  • EV Drive Mode. The crossover will only run on an electric battery;
  • Series Hybrid Mode. When you need to connect a gasoline engine under loads;
  • Parallel Hybrid Mode. In this case, two motors operate in parallel, automatically switching to the desired one. All technical parameters of the crossover meet the Euro-6b standard.

What is an electric motor and its parameters. Outlander PHEV 2017 has two of them, the first electric motor is located in the front, the second behind. Lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 12 kW / h, in total capable of delivering 300 V, were placed under the passengers' seats. The front electric drive is capable of delivering 60 kW, while the maximum torque will be 137 Nm. The rear electric drive is capable of delivering 60 kW and 195 Nm of torque.

A full charge of the battery will take anywhere from 5 hours, the minimum recharge should be at least 30 minutes. In terms of power consumption, the 2017 Outlander Hybrid will eat 134 W / hr per kilometer. It is worth not forgetting that these are only the declared parameters from the manufacturer, and what they will be in real life, we will find out over time, according to customer reviews.

According to experts, the hybrid Outlander's combined cycle fuel consumption will be about 5.6 liters. for 100 km. The battery charge will not be enough for a long distance, so it is better to still rely on the fuel system.

Hybrid crossover price

The manufacturer has not yet named the exact price, since the car will go on sale only in the fall of 2016, but according to preliminary statements, the price of the new Outlander PHEV 2017 crossover in the base configuration will be from $ 42,000-50,000.

As for the price for the maximum trim level of the hybrid Outlander PHEV, it will be more by about 10 thousand dollars. Also, the manufacturer plans to introduce incentives for buyers, going to different indulgences when buying the maximum configurations, yielding in price or making promotions.

Plus, it can be noted that the buyer himself can choose which functions should be installed in the Outlander PHEV 2017, and which he will not use (this does not apply to those provided by the manufacturer's standard).
